Back in design school I was told to capture a contextualized portrait of someone, meaning to take a picture of them in a situation (or background or atrezzo) that would situate them as who they are. Their profession, their life experiences, their family and surroundings… whatever. I chose my grandmother but didn’t manage to actually capture her, until she visited a year later when I was living in Berlin. This is the spirit of an 11 year old girl trapped in a 84 year old body.
